Intended Audience
This activity was developed for internists who manage patients with erectile dysfunction (ED).
Statement of Need
The primary care clinician’s (PCC’s) role is suited to helping patients manage their sexual health for the following reasons: the established clinician–patient relationship is an asset in discussing and resolving sexual problems; the multifactorial issues surrounding ED are appropriately evaluable by the patient’s PCC; and there is a need for long-term patient follow-up.
Learning Objectives Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to
Recognize ED as a highly prevalent and significant medical condition that should be considered more than a quality-of-life issue
Illustrate the presence of ED as a vascular condition that may predict serious underlying or associated medical problems (eg, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, and dyslipidemia) that could lead to cardiovascular disease (CVD)
Recognize that ED is commonly associated with comorbidities, such as depression, diabetes mellitus, CVD, hypertension, dyslipidemia, and lower urinary tract symptoms that are often treated in the primary care setting
Identify the barriers to patient diagnosis and successful treatment outcomes, including time constraints, communication obstacles, embarrassment, misconceptions, and partner issues; and highlight practical techniques for achieving a complete ED assessment with treatment options during a standard office visit
Discuss the efficacy and safety of therapeutic options for ED, including phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitors, and show how the pharmacokinetics of long- vs short-acting PDE5 inhibitors confer clinical benefits
Apply practical management strategies for managing and treating ED in the primary care setting
